World Cricket Festival: Launching a New Era for Cricket in the Middle East

The World Cricket Festival (WCF) 2025, launched by Saudi Arabia, is far more than just a tournament; it represents the Kingdom's most ambitious push yet to establish itself as a central hub for global sports and entertainment. Set to take place in Jeddah in November 2025, the four-day spectacle is designed as a unique fusion of high-octane international cricket, live music concerts, and cultural showcases, attracting global attention and cementing cricket's place within the Middle East's rapidly evolving sports landscape.

The initiative is spearheaded by the Cricket Investment Company (CIC), the commercial arm of the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation (SACF), and is closely aligned with the nation’s Vision 2030 goals for economic diversification and enhanced quality of life.

The Festival's Core Components

The WCF is built to appeal to both the massive expatriate cricket fanbase in the Gulf and to local communities, engaging younger audiences through innovative formats and entertainment.

  • F2 Double Wicket World Cup: The festival's centerpiece is the F2 Double Wicket World Cup, a new, fast-paced tournament featuring 10 international teams competing in a unique two-player format. This format, combined with in-match innovations like the Super Sub rule and the Fireball over, is designed to create dramatic and broadcast-friendly highlights, making the game more dynamic and appealing to a global audience.

  • Culture and Entertainment: Dubbed "where cricket meets culture," the event transforms by night, featuring headline music acts and cultural events, making it a comprehensive "day-and-night" entertainment experience.

Shaping the Future of Cricket in the Middle East

The World Cricket Festival is not a standalone event but the cornerstone of a long-term strategy that promises to fundamentally reshape the future of cricket across the entire Middle East region, particularly within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

1. Building a Sustainable Infrastructure and Ecosystem

Saudi Arabia has committed significant investment toward developing a permanent, professional cricketing infrastructure. This includes plans to construct ICC-standard cricket stadiums in major cities like Riyadh and Jeddah. This investment signals a dedication to building a lasting cricketing ecosystem, moving beyond simply hosting events to creating permanent homes for the sport.

2. Launching Regional Franchise Leagues

Crucially, the WCF launch has paved the way for a slate of new, franchise-based leagues scheduled to roll out across Saudi Arabia and the wider GCC over the next 18 months. These leagues aim to create a year-round calendar of professional cricket, offering new opportunities for local and international players:

  • TX Arabia (10-Over Cricket): A high-energy league focused on attracting younger audiences.

  • Saudi Corporate Premier League (SCPL): A league tailored for corporate competition, integrating cricket with business networking.

  • F2 Double Wicket World Cup: The tournament format itself is set to become an annual fixture.

By creating these domestic and regional leagues, Saudi Arabia is fostering grassroots development, providing professional pathways for local talent, and challenging the UAE and other Gulf nations for the status of the region's premier cricket destination.

3. Cementing Saudi Arabia as a Global Hub

The investment in the WCF and related infrastructure serves the broader goal of positioning the Kingdom as a global hub for sports and entertainment. By hosting a world-class, culturally blended event, Saudi Arabia uses cricket's vast international appeal—especially among its large expatriate community—to achieve economic diversification and bolster its international soft power, thereby defining a new era for the sport’s presence in the Middle East.
